Selection strategy and technical variations of extraanatomic bypass in surgical management of complex and recurrent aortic coarctation and hypoplastic aortic arch

Method In 1989-2012, 60 patients (mean age 29 ± 6.7years) with complex aortic coarctation (n = 33), recurrent coarctation (n = 27; anastomosis pseudoaneurysm in 10), underwent correction using extraanatomic bypass, either or without extracorporeal circulation. The decision to use extracorporeal circulation was based on the anatomical location of the coarctation, length of hypoplasia and history...

Variant technique of extra-anatomic aortic bypass in aortic recoarctation.

Introduction Coarctation of the aorta (CoAo) is a congenital narrowing of the proximal region of the descending aorta, adjacent to the site of insertion of the ductus arteriosus or ligamentum arteriosum. Less frequently, the CoAo is located more proximally, between the left common carotid and left subclavian arteries, or in other segments of the aortic arch. It can occasionally occur in the des...

Impact of ascending to descending aortic bypass for aortic coarctation on 3-dimensional hemodynamics.

n the management of aortic coarctation, endovascular techniques and surgical repair have been shown to have similar short-term morbidity. 1 However, further studies have shown that, in patients with coarctation that are complex or have previously undergone surgical repair, an ascending-descending aortic bypass surgery is effective in decreasing future interventions. 2 We present postoperative f...

Role of endovascular repair in the management of late pseudo-aneurysms following open surgery for aortic coarctation.

BACKGROUND Coarctation of the aorta accounts for almost 5% of all congenital cardiac malformations, and it is usually treated by open surgical procedures. Despite the excellent primary results, many patients may develop anastomotic pseudo-aneurysms, associated with considerable morbidity and mortality rates. We investigated the role of endovascular repair as an alternative to open re-do surgery...

False aneurysms of an ascending-aorta-to-abdominal-aorta bypass for coarctation of the aorta.

Our male patient had a hypoplastic isthmus and a preductal coarctation of the aorta. The coarctation was corrected by resection and end-to-end anastomosis at the age of 3 months. The left subclavian artery was sacrificed in this procedure. Thirteen years later, a recoarctation involving the left carotid artery was diagnosed. Surgical correction was achieved with a preclotted Dacron knitted graf...
